About our cause
Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens provides a much loved and valued space and service for the community.
We are a very tiny Trust with a really big responsibility to look after, and share, a unique green and historic space in east Birmingham. The 40 acres of sublime 18th century formal Gardens and Local Nature Reserve are surrounded by fast roads and industrial landscapes.
We are passionate about sharing its beauty with people and caring for it for nature and wildlife .
As well as opening the spaces for visitors all year round, staff and volunteers run more than 100 activities and events : from forest schools and wildlife walks to creative activities and culture: theatre, arts and music. We get people involved in caring for nature, improving their wellbeing and finding inspiration in history and beauty.
The Trust receives no regular funding support and works hard, in every way possible to raise the £1,000 per day per year that it takes to maintain and share the nationally significant Grade 2* Gardens and landscape.
We need your help so we can continue to keep this precious place for people.
Project update
With your help in 2024 we were able to install a small woodland play area in the Gardens so that our very young visitors use their imagination, their energy and learn to stretch what they can daringly do.
All part of our mission to provide green spaces and ‘first encounters with Nature’ for local families. Thank you for your support !
2025
We’re pleased to report that 50% more people visited and used the Gardens in 2024!– we are proud that we can share such a precious and beautiful space with more and more people.
Climate change and unpredictable seasonal weather continues to create challenges for our small team of gardeners and volunteers.
In 2024 we struggled to keep a lid on the spread of the devastating Box Moth, rescheduled and reshaped some annual planting schemes - within the limits of our historical style – to cope with wetter Summers and ‘moveable’ Springs, re-planted some of our heritage apple orchards and spent a lot more money on trimming, caring for and making safe our many hundreds of mature trees.
Our two professional Gardeners and talented volunteers do more and more each year… but sometimes we need to bring in specialists - with bigger machinery.
In 2025 our fundraising goal here is to support the work of our Gardening team, staff and volunteers so that they can get the extra training and help they need.
We could not do this work without our volunteers - over 30 of them give their precious time for the Gardens. An amazing 20% of our volunteers are in their 80s, with at least another 40% over 60.
They do pretty well to keep the 40 acres in beautiful condition, but there are some things even they need extra support with; like looking after our tulip tree, the giant trimmed yews and chestnuts and 150m holly hedge and maze.
With your help buying tickets this year we hope to raise £3,000 towards the costs of all our tree work.
Good luck and many thanks!
